Emery cloth is a coated abrasive tool consisting of emery (a natural abrasive composed of corundum and magnetite) bonded to a cloth backing, and its grit size is classified by the number of abrasive particles per square inch, determining its cutting and finishing capabilities.
Its grit range is typically 40 to 320. covering coarse, medium, and fine grades. Coarse grits (40–80) are used for heavy material removal, such as rust, burrs, or rough shaping on metal surfaces.

Medium grits (100–180) are suitable for smoothing surfaces and preparing them for further finishing. Fine grits (240–320) are ideal for final polishing and achieving a smooth, uniform surface.
Unlike synthetic abrasives, emery cloth’s grit is natural, offering consistent abrasion. Its grit selection depends on the application: coarser grits for heavy-duty tasks, finer grits for precision finishing, making it widely used in metalworking, woodworking, and automotive maintenance.
